Looking mightily pleased with himself, climbing expert Franklin easily ascends to the top of an old speaker. He was inspired in this quest by squirrels on the roof.
He’s just packed with energy, the most active young cat we’ve ever encountered, and we’ve known a few. He’s getting into everything and he’s scary smart. One night after turning in, I heard cellophane rattling all over the kitchen floor. I had no doubt it was propelled by Franklin, so I got up, took an individually wrapped biscuit away from him, and stashed it away. I’m not sure he really wanted to eat it, since the ingredients were wheat and two kinds of nuts, but a few minutes later I heard the same sound. Getting up again, I took yet another biscuit from him. Now I knew he had a source, so I walked towards the computer table, where I expected my husband might have left the open box. I heard Franklin’s paw sounds making a fast dash to the place he’d knocked it to the floor; he knew exactly where he’d left his goodies and had come to prevent me from taking them. He’d also known to wait until we turned in before snagging these. Smooth! Opposable thumbs saved us from a night of noisy, crackling plastic. The cat did look crestfallen, and I felt bad about spoiling his fun. He has plenty of toy mice, though.
Frankie’s a twisty kitty! When we first got him in off the streets he was really thin. Now, still lithe and limber, he’s gaining weight fast.
Franklin and his shadow survey his realm.
Even when resting, Franklin always knows what’s going on around him!
Franklin flexes that long, strong foreleg. It might be okay to settle down for a moment, he’s thinking.
I still miss this little Ultraviolet sprite, now at the Rainbow Bridge, so much.
“Snort! That ain’t me! It’s my solo post! RAWR!” says Franklin.
“It’s called a cameo appearance. I’ll explain later. And here’s another of you.”
“OK purrrrr. I think.”
Ah, gorgeous photos. I once had a black cat with eyes as green as Franklin’s. Beautiful face.

They sure are. I never understood the superstition since they are such stunning creatures. π

I always thought black kitties were the most beautiful of cats, and never understood the superstition either. But strangely, it persists. And cats of all colors still get blamed for everything sometimes, sigh.

Franklin and I thank you MNL! Frankie hasn’t outgrown his kitten phase yet! It’s fun, but I can enjoy the sweetness of older kitties like your Midnight, too.

I think I love Franklin! π He reminds me a lot of our Dizzy.
The story of his intelligence with the biscuits cracked me up. They are brilliant. Thank you so much for sharing this. I cracked up.

That stretched foreleg has been Barmalei’s trademark pose since he was a tiny baby! None of our other cats sit like that, although Baby Pyshka tries to imitate her elders sometimes, but loses patience quickly.
I am sorry to hear Ultraviolet is on the Rainbow Bridge – are you sure?
LikeLiked by 2 people
That’s interesting about Barmalei also stretching the foreleg! Franklin settles that way consistently, and come to think about it, our other cats usually didn’t.
All our cats stay indoors, so we are sure about Ultraviolet. She died in her sleep after having what appeared to be a heart attack. She had just been found to be healthy in a vet check-up about a month before. Another vet thought it must have been cardiomyopathy – it’s found in Persian cats and she had some Persian heritage. The sudden loss makes it hard to get through. Franklin does have a tipped ear like a feral but he appears to be friendly and lives indoors with us. He showed up at a friend’s house wanting to get in and the friend couldn’t keep him.

My husband calls this pose “majestic,” and perhaps it’s common to male short hair black cats, or some kind of genetic trait – I don’t know, but it looks regal.
All our cats are rescues, but rescued as babies and taken into the house, so they don’t have tipped ears – no reason.
Again, deeply sorry about Ultraviolet!

Thank you for your sympathy about Ultraviolet! It does help that people care. It’s wonderful that you rescue and take in kitties! Almost all of ours were found or walked up to the door. A friend who feeds ferals finds friendlies among them and asks who might want them so that’s how we got the most recent kitties. We don’t know who had Franklin ear-tipped as a feral because he seems clearly friendly, although he does retain a few feral traits.

I know how we mourned when we lost kitties. Perhaps Franklin hadn’t been feral initially, and then somehow got out or got lost, and someone mistook him for a feral and got him neutered and ear-tipped. As long as he is more friendly, than feral, I am sure you enjoy his company.

It is indeed so hard to lose the kitties, there are many we still miss even after years. Franklin keeps us laughing, he is a super-charged kitty about one year with endless energy and curiosity!

Pyshka is almost 2, or so we and the vet estimate, and she is a very smart ADHD child with OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). When she gets it into her head to to explore something, she works at it until she deconstructs it to bits. That includes kitchen cabinets! She is a mini-tiger, and cute as a button. All our kitties have been hilarious troublemakers when they were growing up, so we are used to it. Barmalei and his sister Beba are way past that stage; they are almost 10.

Franklin and I thank you, Candace! He walked into a friend’s house and appeared to be too friendly to be feral, although he’d been ear-tipped. However he does retain a few feral and uncivilized behaviors!

Franklin is gorgeous! And he flexes his foreleg exactly the way our Grishnack did. Poor Ultraviolet will never be forgotten though. My daughter was not ready to get another cat for 2.5 years. Just two days ago they finally brought home a three years old ginger tabby, Sam. I look forward to meeting him tonight through the video chat π

Franklin and I thank you, Inese! I bet Grishnack was a cutie, I just love it when kitties flex those little forelegs! I understand not being ready for another cat for a long time when one leaves. I’m not sure we were quite ready for Franklin but there he was on the street, needing to come in. Sam sounds like a beauty, have fun meeting him!

I just did. Sam is a ginger beauty. He is from New Jersey, originally from a shelter π I am happy for Franklin and you all. Who knows how long you would wait, but he found you first π

Funny how they always seem to find us! Most of ours walked up from the woods or the streets. It’s marvelous that Sam is a shelter kitty! We’ll adopt from shelters if there’s ever a time when no cats come to the door.

Franklin even looks naughty – a twinkle in his beautiful eyes. Isn’t it fun when a young cat imbues our household with friskiness? Toffee still has a few naughty moments. The other day she stood on my tummy to reach my ham sandwich. This is the cat who won’t sit in your lap or let her lift you up! Franklin looks like Toffee’s sibling, Treacle, who didn’t survive the streets of Egypt. Ultraviolet looks like such a delicate little princess compared to Franklin. Lovely memories, Leah.

Ahahaha Kerry, you have Franklin pegged, and also our little UV. He is indeed a lot of fun, although keeping up with a youngster is a bit of a challenge for us! So many things to pick up every day that have been tumbled to the floor! I laughed when you told me about Toffee trying to get your sandwich. Thanks so much for visiting, you gave me a much-needed lift today! β€

Franklin the Magnificent should probably stick with Franklin the Flexible! Good to see he is putting on a little weight, but not too much! All that flexing may keep him thin!

LOL, Franklin’s climbing doesn’t exactly thrill us, but he can move upwards in a flash! Right now he’s eating voraciously like many former strays who remember when they weren’t getting enough. He’s also a growing boy who is filling out. We’ll ration his food if he does start to gain too much.

Okay, so I think Franklin definitely has a modeling career in one of his nine lives β heβs got those gorgeous golden eyes and that sleek and shiny black fur β just beautiful (or perhaps I should say βhandsomeβ since heβs a he). Love this post, Leah. I know one cat can never replace another, but itβs so good to see little Franklin settling in with your and your husband, and I know heβs got his own personality to charm you with (just as UV did). And, Iβll say it again: Your photos are fabulous! Really, such professional, stunning photographs! Hugs to you all! Deb

Franklin is a very handsome cat! There is no energy like young cat energy for getting into mischief, unless it is out Lucio, who at almost 14, still can’t help himself and gets into all kinds of trouble.
