UPDATE October 14, 2020. Catwoods has now won two awards from the Cat Writers’ Association, the Certificate of Excellence and the very prestigious MUSE Medallion Award!
Years ago I started writing a cat book, and now, Volume 1 is out! It’s been a long slog getting this done. For me, it’s exciting but a little scary too.
That’s The Minx you see in the cover picture, taken by the hubs. I took the pic of the background greenery. If you purchase the book you’ll see a little surprise looking out at you on the spine.
The book tells of the years of fun and joy as we find our cats on the streets and in the woods, but it also has serious research about cats and other critters. There’s a chapter about current kerfluffles between bird advocates and cat advocates. It’s 364 pages, thoroughly researched, and has endnotes. There is no electronic version as books with endnotes aren’t usually published electronically, according to the publisher.
Publishing is by Borgo Publishing, a local indie publisher.
It’s available at Amazon and Barnes and Noble. These are the links:
On Amazon, look for the “1 new from 23.95” to get a new copy from the Borgo Publishing.
Or, you can also order it direct the publisher!Β Borgo Publishing Catwoods page.
Below is one a brief description of the book, one of those that sounds like someone else wrote it, but I actually wrote it myself.
Catwoods, Stories and Studies of Our Feline Companions, Volume 1 is about a couple who rescue, adopt, and love cats in their deep woods home in the southern US. These cats are all such original characters that they make every day blissful, giddy, poetic, or even somber, the way the moods and phases of real life unfold. Leah Alford observes domestic felines indoors and later studies wildlings like foxes and raccoons who live outdoors amidst the glowing, dense leaves of the Appalachian jungle. A screaming non-entity in the night might well have been a cougar. This heavily researched volume covers cat coat color and genetics, color in nature, cat behavior and affection, multi-cat home dynamics, feral cats, spay and neuter, radial hypoplasia cats, black cat rhapsodies, and more. Communication between animals and humans is the core of Catwoods, as despite the language barrier Alford and her husband have rapport with each cat; with looks, gestures, purrs, and meaningful visual cues, the cats voice their declarations and diatribes. This first volume, which extends into the year 2004, revels in the natural world, the luxuriance of birds, insects, and yelling frogs. Covering many decades, Alford also writes of art, music, and writing in a changing South.
Below is a picture of Franklin, who is a tad peeved. He wants to know why we didn’t start with Volume 2 since that’s where he enters the picture. He doesn’t accept my explanations about time sequence, or the fact that he can’t be listed among the other cat editors since by his own choice, he’s just not an editing cat.
Congratulations for getting you first volume out there. I will be ordering my own copy shorty, and look forwards to reading about your cats and your observations. Publishing is a really hard thing to do, so I applaud your determination and you and your cats editing skills π

Oh yes, your comment now remind me John Grisham’s novels that I like reading. Grisham often pivots his stories based on southern states notably Mississippi and I am currently reading ‘Sycamore Row’ where I think mentioned ‘Judge sitting at his porch drinking Whiskey Sour…..’. Grisham’s novels often delineates souther lifestyle and I think I can connect it better now from your comment above.

The hubs and I have read some John Grisham too! Although I haven’t read that one. I’ll get around to reading it one day!

Belated but Big Congratulation for your mammoth endeavor to publish books on cats. I am proud to be part of your blog Catwoods and I really like the name Porch Party. It brings the vivid image of cats walking around, sharing cakes and drink and having fun. Really imaginative. I once had a dream, I was surrounded by many cats in a forest and some of the cats were pushing a ice cream buggy and offering me ice cream, almost like your porch party …. Keep up the excellent work Leah! Paws Up!

Thanks very much Ashraf, we are happy to have you along! That was quite a dream you had! And quite a description of cats having a party! The Porch Party idea came from life in the southeastern region of the US where I live. It stays warm much of the year and people talked and told stories on the porch, and sometimes gatherings would be announced as a “porch party”. We don’t actually have a porch now, (although we wish we did); it refers back to that somewhat outdoors conversational tradition.

Congratulations, Leah! I wish you much success. I certainly understand the kerfluffle between cat and bird advocates since I am both. I don’t mention my cats much to my birding friends.

Thank you so much for the good wishes, Candace! I love both cats and birds too. It’s sad (and in my opinion needless), that the conflict arose, and that it’s become so heated.

Congratulations on your book. I didn’t see a Kindle addition. Will you have an ebook version of this book?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Thank you so much, Charles! The book is heavily researched and has a great many endnotes, and the publisher told me that kind of book usually isn’t published electronically. So for right now there won’t be an electronic version, although I may ask about it, consider it, in the future. It’s 364 pages, I need to add that to the post.

I am not sure why the publisher would say that. I suppose if there are a lot of photos it would not be ideal for a standard Kindle and there is a cost to the author for books that are large in megabytes. I think a workaround would be to have a link to PDFs that can be downloaded to accompany the book. Since downsizing, I typically don’t buy physical books anymore. If you do come out with an e-book, please let me know.

That’s interesting about the PDF link Charles. There are actually no photos inside, only on the cover. I probably will bring it up with the publisher although not right away. I will let you know if I come out with an ebook. In my own situation, I do have a house full of books, lol, and will be donating a few to the library soon. But so far I just haven’t gone kindle as I feel I spend enough time with screens already.

Congratulations on finally finishing the book. Since you titled it Volume 1, you are committed to writing the companion book. Franklin will insist!

Greg, thank you for your kind words! Actually Volume 2 is already written except for a few details I want to add. Franklin is indeed insisting that I add more ink about him! I just kept writing for many years and ended up with about 850 pages, so we had to split that into two books. The second book isn’t set up to print yet and the cover art isn’t assembled, although I’ve chosen the pics.

Cats communicate, and it must be frustrating when their people don’t get it! I think they are stymied at our attempts to comunicate as well!
LikeLiked by 1 person
I totally agree Lauren, cats do communicate, and even though I’ve read many of the books on how they do it, I am still mystified and have so much to learn! And I’m sure they know that, lol.
